Birding
Birding is one of the thrilling safari experiences fancied by a number of travelers destined for Tsavo national park. This birding haven hosts over 500 bird species with a healthy population per species watched throughout the year. On record, 40 bird species are permanent residents of this fortress and 100 migratory species.
The migratory species come during the breeding season for a period of 2 to 3 months before returning to destinations of origin. March to May is the ideal season for birding and November as these rainy seasons attract the migratory species to breed.
Look out for bird species like Narina trogon, Papyrus Gonolek, River Warbler, Acrocephalusgriseldis, Martial Eagle, Somolia Ostrich, Anhinga rufa, , Casmerodius albus, African Finfot, Lesser Kestrel, Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis, Red-Bellied parrot, Fischer’ starling, Polemaetusbellicosus, Golden Pitpit, Black-faced sangrouse, Taita fiscal, Rufous chatterer, Masai ostrich, Vulturine guineafowl, Secretary bird, Shelkley’s starling, Golden-breasted starling, Slender-tailed nightjar, Vultures, Hamerkop, common bulbul, Little egret, Love birds, Mourning Dove, trigonoceps occipitalis, Taita falcon, Pangani longclaw and many others.
Game drives/Game viewing
Game viewing/ Game drives are mandatory for most visitors to Tsavo national park as a typical African safari is incomplete without a game drive. Game drives in Tsavo national park account dominate wildlife experience at the park. Morning game drives are more rewarding as nature actively interacts.
The evening game drive is available to catch up with some of the shy and nocturnal animals and these last 2-4hrs. A combination of the morning and evening game drive provide an opportunity for an explicit experience in the wild. During the game drives you will have opportunity to encounter the wildlife population like Rhinos, Lions, Elephants, Buffaloes, Giraffes, Zebras, African hunting/wild dogs, Crocodiles, Lesser Kudu, Cheetahs, Hippos, Wildebeests, Gazelles, Oryx, Eland, Leopards and many more.
Unlike birding which is done during the rainy season, game viewing /game drives are best done during the dry season. The game drives are best done when the game viewing tracks are easily accessible. During the dry season, the grass at the park is short hence easy and clear seeing of the animals especially the shy animals like leopards and Rhinos.
Guided Nature walks/walking Safaris
Guided nature walks are done in specific places of the park. You traverse parts of the national park in company of an armed ranger. This experience not only brings you close to the animals but also makes you feel the fresh breeze of the African bush on foot. The sound of this is crazy as you’re in a territory of lions but there’s nothing to worry about as the national park ranger has been trained to guide these experiences. The Poachers hill will give you All round aerial view of the national park.
Cultural tours
Most of the national parks are bordered by the native Maasai people who command a unique culture that is yet to be creolized. Visit the locals in their home settlement patterns and well fenced with local materials like thorns. While there, watch them dance, dance, play songs and many more cultural experiences
Sightseeing
This is best along the unique fifty million gallons of crystal water produced underneath the rough rocky surfaces. You visit the Mazima springs and other special points in the park.
