Tips, and Guidelines for Mountain Gorilla Trekking experience in Rwanda

Guidelines for Mountain Gorilla Trekking, Visitors must adhere to;

 

✓ To minimize possible transmission of human diseases, visitors are asked to maintain a distance of 7 meters (about 22
feet) from the gorillas.
If you are sick with a cold, flu or –other contagious illness, please do not visit the gorillas.

✓ Viewing time is limited to one hour.

✓ Maximum of 8 visitors per group.

✓ Spitting in the park is strictly prohibited.

✓ Should you cough, cover your mouth and turn away from the gorillas? Recommended to have a face musk

✓ When with the gorillas, keep your voice low.

✓ Try not to make rapid movements that may frighten the gorillas.

✓ If a gorilla should load or vocalize at you, do not be alarmed, stand still, look away from the gorilla and follow your
guide’s directions.

✓ Do not litter.

✓ Smoking near the gorillas is forbidden

✓ Taking photos. Photographs are permitted, although you may not use flash.

Climate:

The climate in Volcanoes National Park is changeable, and you can generally expect both sun and rainfall during the
day. At 1,700m above sea level, the area is generally quite cold, particularly in the evening, so warm clothing is advised.

What to Wear? Clothing & Footwear

Recommended clothing is long trousers and shirts when in the forest to avoid nettle stings. Steady walking shoes or hiking boots are essential. Raingear is useful.

✓ Waterproof Hiking Boots: Essential for the muddy, steep terrain; choose ones with good ankle support.

✓ Long-Sleeved Shirts & Pants: Protect from scratches, insect bites, and sun exposure.

✓ Rain Jacket: The weather in the mountains is unpredictable and often rainy.

✓ Gaiters: Keep mud, water, and insects out of your boots.

✓ Hat & Gloves: A hat protects you from the sun, and gloves provide protection from thorny vegetation when
you use them for support.

✓ Warm Layers: Pack layers for the chilly mornings and high-altitude environment.

Gear & Equipment

✓ Waterproof Backpack: A daypack is ideal for carrying essentials like bottled water, and small snacks.

✓ Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated throughout the trek.

✓ Camera: Bring a camera with extra memory and batteries, but ensure it does not have a strong flashlight, as
this can disturb the gorillas.

✓ Insect Repellent: To protect against bugs.

✓ First-Aid Kit: Include basics like antiseptic wipes, Band-Aids, and anti-diarrheal medicine.

✓ Cameras & Binoculars: For better viewing of wildlife.

✓ Masks: wearing a mask is crucial for protecting the gorillas from human diseases

Porters:

Porters are available to assist you carry your backpack, freeing your hands for photography and navigating the
terrain.

Fitness:

Mountain gorillas live at high altitude and may require one to be physically fit as hiking may cause difficulties for some
visitors. You should walk slowly and drink plenty of water.
