Overview

Mount Karisimbi is the highest peak in Rwanda and the tallest of the eight major volcanoes in the Virunga ranges, standing at 4,507 meters (14,787 feet) above sea level. Located within Volcanoes National Park, it straddles the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Hiking Mount Karisimbi is a challenging yet rewarding experience. The trek typically spans two days, with the first day involving a gradual ascent through the forest to a campsite located at approximately 3,700 meters. The second day includes the final push to the summit and the descent back to the starting point.

Day 1:Pick up, drive Volcanoes National Park for the Hike

Early morning at 5:00 am, you will be picked from your Hotel in Kigali and drive to headquarters for registration. You’ll receive a briefing from park rangers about the hike, including duration and important details then later you transfer to the starting point situated at the base of Mount Bisoke Volcano.

You’ll ascend the mountain for about 6-8 hours, reaching a campsite around 3700 meters where you will spend the night at the campsite, which is equipped with tents

Day 2: Continue ascending to the summit. Descend & drive back to Kigali.

After going through the cold night and having delicious breakfast embark on a challenging 1 hour hike to the summit along steep slopes, stronger winds and fog.

Upon reaching the summit of Karisimbi Volcano, you will enjoy the magical views of the other Virunga ranges at a distance i.e. Mount Muhabura volcano, Nyamulagira volcano and Nyiragongo.

After enjoying the stunning views, embark on a 6 hour descent to the starting point then to the park office and transfer back top Kigali.

 

What to Pack for Mount Karisimbi Hiking?
